Harbin Institute of Petroleum (HIP), approved by China’s Ministry of Education as a full-time regular undergraduate institution, was established in 2003. In 2024, it was granted the status of a master's degree awarding unit under construction. For consecutive years, the institute has been ranked first among Chinese geological, mining, and petroleum universities by the Alumni Association. It has been honored with titles such as "China's Model University" by CNR.cn, "Excellence in Chinese Higher Education," "National Most Influential University," and "First Prize in the FLTRP Teaching Star Competition."

Guided by its motto "Erudition, Pragmatism, Determination, and Innovation," HIP adheres to a "local and application-oriented" positioning. It has developed an academic structure focused on engineering, with coordinated development in economics, management, literature, arts, and education. The campus spans 89.06 hectares and hosts over 12,000 full-time students. Offering 35 undergraduate programs, it enrolls students from 24 provinces across China. The employment rate for its key programs has exceeded 95% for ten consecutive years, and it has cultivated nearly 50,000 high-quality application-oriented talents for society.

The institute fully implements the Party's educational policies, leading with the "Iron Man Pioneer Party Building" initiative to integrate the Iron Man Spirit into the entire talent cultivation process. Curriculum Integration: It has established the "Collaborative Education Studio for Ideological and Political Courses and Course Ideology" and the "Iron Man Spirit and Culture Research Center" to deeply integrate ideological and political elements with specialized courses. Practice Empowerment: A provincial-level "Great Ideological and Political Practice Education Base," the "Iron Man Spirit Education Hall," has been built. The original situational drama "Ode to the Iron Man," created by teachers and students, won the first prize in the provincial college student art exhibition. Study Style Linkage: Party conduct promotes study style, with the construction of teacher ethics and the creation of Party member demonstration posts incorporated into the faculty evaluation system, building a new pattern of "Three-Way Education" (all-round, whole-process, and all-member education). The Party branch of the School of Marxism was selected as a "National Model Party Branch," and the institute has been honored as "Heilongjiang Provincial Advanced Collective in Teacher Ethics" and "Civilized Campus in the Provincial Higher Education System."
